Got An Hour To Burn?

Orangetheory Fitness, the scientifically-backed and fast-growing fitness franchise, announced on March 1 the launch of its brand new wearable heart rate monitor and a revamp of its mobile app. The new heart rate monitor, OTBeat Link, is worn on the wrist and powered by Mio. The OTbeat app pairs with the new heart rate monitor, and aims to provide a singular platform for members to view their workout histories, set goals, book classes, and much more.

“The science behind Orangetheory Fitness is what sets us apart from other workouts on the market,” said Dave Long, co-founder and chief executive officer of Orangetheory Fitness. “As a brand, we are constantly evaluating our programs to ensure we are using the latest technology to enhance the science-backed workout and provide the best overall experience for our valued members.

Launched in limited supply earlier this year, the OTBeat Link is an alternative to the existing OTbeat chest strap used in Orangetheory Fitness studios across the nation. While the monitor in the chest strap captures heart rate by listening to and recording the beating heart, the wristband monitor reads the heart rate through LED technology. To further sync with this new technology, Orangetheory updated its OTbeat application, which connects the in-studio experience with workouts done outside the studio. Users have more control within the app thanks to new features, such as the ability to set heart rate zones to optimize calorie burn, to analyze the amount of time spent in each zone and to view splat points from workouts in and outside of the studio.

“The ability to combine data from members both in and out-of-studio experiences will provide users with a more complete view of their fitness levels and goals,” said Long. “Orangetheory Fitness’ objective has always been to improve the overall health and welfare of as many people as we possibly can – not just while in our studios – and the new OTbeat app is helping our members do just that.”

The Back Porch

Good Times With Good Folks

The Austin food scene has exploded in the past decade. Every type of cuisine you can imagine – often at prices you can’t. One thing has been missing though – especially in the North Austin/Cedar Park area – a casual neighborhood restaurant with American cuisine made from scratch that knocks your socks off. When you want delicious food and drinks, visit The Back Porch, located at 12233 FM 620 North, Suite 104 in Austin.

The goal at The Back Porch since day one has been to establish itself as a neighborhood favorite. At the helm are chefs Dan and Suzy Parrott. With a combined experience base of nearly 60 years, they are certain of one thing: food does not have to be fancy but it must always be correct. They bring in the best ingredients and prepare everything – right on down to the ketchup – in-house. “People love that and they can tell the difference,” said Parrott. “We don’t do mixes here. We blend and make everything ourselves.” The passion they have for the food extends to their guests as well. “We love and value sharing people’s time with them. I want them to leave delighted, saying ‘that was time well-spent’.”

Along with their dedication to serving the best food, The Back Porch keeps things simple. Take the burger, for instance – or as Parrott refers to it, “THE burger”. The Back Porch burgers are ground daily from four of the best cuts of Black Angus beef – including two cuts usually reserved for steak. The bun is a French-style brioche baked on-site daily. Their French Fries are made using Kennebec potatoes, triple-blanched in the Belgian style. You’re going to sit down and have one of the best burgers and fries you’ll find anywhere. Other popular items are the various wood-fired pizzas and the fish and chips. “We sell more fish and chips than half of England,” joked Dan. They use only cold-water Icelandic cod and one of their 25 Texas beers available on tap for the batter.

Every day brings a different reason to visit The Back Porch. In addition to daily specials and live music on Friday nights, there’s brunch on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Like them on Facebook at @backporchatx to learn about all the different daily offers and events.

Part of being the neighborhood restaurant is taking an active role in the community. Providing support to local schools and other youth groups is The Back Porch’s favored way of doing so.

When you want good food, personal service and fun times, be sure to visit The Back Porch. They’re open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday. Anchor Bar

Home of The Original Chicken Wing

On March 4th, 1964, Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar at the now-famous Anchor Bar Restaurant in Buffalo, NY. Late that evening, a group of Dominic’s friends arrived at the bar with ravenous appetites. Dominic asked his mother,Teressa, to prepare something for his friends to eat.

They looked like chicken wings, a part of the chicken that usually went into the stock pot for soup. Teressa had deep fried the wings and flavored them with a secret sauce. The wings were an instant hit and it didn’t take long for people to flock to the bar to experience their new taste sensation. From that evening on, Buffalo Wings became a regular part of the menu at the Anchor Bar.

The phenomenon created in 1964 by Teressa Bellissimo has spread across the globe. Although many have tried to duplicate the Buffalo wing, the closely guarded secret recipe is what makes Frank & Teressa’s the proclaimed “Best Wings in the World”.
