Gibson Daoud considers himself the Don Quixote of the auto glass industry. Not the insane Don Quixote who chases windmills, but the idealistic Don Quixote who fights passionately for change.

Daoud, 32 and owner of Auto Glass Clinic, knows his industry has a bad reputation, and one need only go to a car wash to see what he means.

Every time he’s at a car wash, there’s some person who examines a driver’s windshield, determines there’s some sort of nick or cut in it, and pressures that driver to let the person repair it, often using the line, “Your insurance company will pay for it” as a selling point.

Sometimes, Daoud is wearing his Auto Glass Clinic uniform or driving one of his fleet vans. Doesn’t matter. He still gets approached.

“Those car wash people, they’re the bane of our existence,” he said. “They’re farmers. They’re chip-repair frauds. You’ll never catch one of our guys at a car wash. We are different in so many ways.”

First, there’s the quality of product. Unlike junk dealers who might install a used windshield for $100, Daoud said he spends the majority of his expenses on higher-level adhesive, primer, glass and technicians. He cuts costs elsewhere, such as unnecessary office supplies.

“Keeping my bottom line is keeping my customers happy,” he said. “As much as I want to turn a penny into a dollar, I will not do shoddy work.”

Next, he leads by example. There is nothing he expects from any of his seven team members that he wouldn’t do himself, so don’t be surprised if it’s Daoud who shows up to the house or business to do the work.

Third, he doesn’t engage in any high-pressure sales tactics. Nor does he cold-call anyone, not even former customers.

“I don’t want to even predict when you might need another windshield,” he said. “We do good enough work for you to remember us the next time you need a windshield. If you don’t, shame on me.”

A native Arizonan, Doug has been in the auto glass industry since he was just 17 years old.
