What to do When a Circuit Breaker Trips

A circuit breaker tripping happens pretty often if you have a lot of things plugged in and operating at once. When a circuit becomes overloaded, your system has a function in place to protect from damage or fire that will automatically cut power to that circuit. When this happens, you may hear a pop at the same time the electricity is disconnected.

The first step is to turn off all the lights and unplug items that are not always in use. You do this in order to reduce the strain on the circuit, otherwise if you restore power, the circuit will just trip again and you could cause damage.

If the circuit trips again you will want to plug some items into another circuit. If you do not have another circuit, you can have an electrician install additional or dedicated circuits for your home to handle additional amperage.

You will want to find your electrical panel. The array of circuit breakers should be labelled indicating which rooms or appliances they control.Be sure that you are wearing shoes, that the floor or ground you are standing on is not wet, and that your hands and clothing are dry before you open the electrical panel box. Electricity can be dangerous but basic precautions will keep you safe.

Look at the direction that most the circuit breakers are in, and look for one that is in the off position or pointed in the opposite direction as the rest of them. The circuit breaker you tripped may not be all the way to the opposite “off” side.

When you have found the circuit breaker that tripped and move that circuit breaker completely over to the “off” position. Wait a moment and then move it all the way over to the full “on” position. You should find that the power has been restored to the room or area where you were when the power went off.

Carefully plug items back in and try to avoid overloading the circuit again. However, if you have reduced the number of items running off that circuit and it continues to trip, you may have bigger problems. Big offenders for overloading a circuit can include hair dryers, portable A/C units, old appliances, toasters, coffee pots, microwaves, and power tools. Check cords often to be sure they are not frayed, all items are plugged completely into the outlets, and nothing is coming loose.

If you have plugged items into another circuit, checked the condition of all of your appliances and everything plugged in and the breaker continues to trip, especially immediately after you turned it back to the full “on” position, you may have a short in your system. Faulty switches, receptacles, shoddy wiring, damaged cords or plugs, or a malfunctioning appliance may cause a short circuit. Carefully check outlets and switches to see if they smell or feel hot to the touch but do not disassemble them!

A short circuit is a fire hazard, and a licensed electrician will be able to locate the source of the short and make any repairs needed to make your home or office safe again. For your personal safety, you should always use caution when working around electricity and never attempt to repair cords or equipment yourself. If electrical equipment has been flooded or exposed to water, always have a licensed electrician inspect it first before energizing it.

While it may be frustrating to have a circuit breaker trip, these systems are in place for safety and to protect you and your family. Most major problems in the home can be detected early and corrected by paying close attention to the warning signs long before damage occurs.

Day’s Fine Jewelry

Since 1993, Dave Kendall has operated Day’s Fine Jewelry with this philosophy: “Anything we can do for our customers, regardless of price, we’ll do.”

Example: The time a man came in looking for a watch pin. Kendall declined to charge him the two cents, instead telling him, “Stop in sometime when you need something.” The man did return and became a great customer – he once bought two rings for $13,000, although that’s not the reason Kendall does that.

That kind of service won’t change when Kendall hands the reins to his friend, Lorin Jones. And Jones will bring fine custom jewelry to Day’s.

For those who didn’t know, Dave is selling his store to Lorin and Ginger Jones, whom he has known for 25 years – and who worked together for three years 17 years ago. Jones, an accomplished designer with 32 years of experience, managed other jewelry stores but has never owned one.

“With bittersweet feelings, after 47 years in the jewelry business, including 25 at Day’s Fine Jewelry, I have decided to retire,” Kendall said, adding the Jones’ take over Jan. 1. But before that, the two will work together, Kendall introducing the Jones’ to all his customers and helping with the transition into the new year. Jones, in turn, will introduce all his customers to a more centralized location; he previously has driven as many as 50 miles to reach his customers.

Speaking of Kendall, “He literally has love and respect for his customers,” Jones said. “He’s always been willing to go the extra mile to give customers what they want.”

Actually, the two complement each other well. Jones is an accomplished, award-winning designer and jeweler, something that impresses Kendall. He recalls a time a customer wanted a ring with 22 diamonds placed just so. Jones drew it and created it exactly as the customer envisioned.

“Some people think they’re good,” Kendall said, “but Lorin is the real deal.”

Jones, in turn, appreciates the extensive repair side to Day’s Fine Jewelry. “It’s going to be a nice marriage,” he said. “We’ll have more of both services put together.”

This works for Jones, 54, who long wanted to own his own jewelry store. Many years ago, a jeweler he looked up to asked him what kind of jeweler he wanted to be. “I told him I want to do everything: custom design, build and service anything our customers want,” Jones said. “I want (customers) to be able to hand (jewelry) to me and I can say, ‘I can do that.’ ”

Nothing’s going to change, they insist. Customers will still be treated well, but now will have more options. It will just be a different person treating them well.

“I think he’ll do well here,” Kendall said..

At Mod Home Urban Interiors, what you see is what you get. Or is it?

The website shows pages of sofas, sectionals, tables, chairs, lamps, rugs, bedroom furniture, entertainment centers and pillows, yet General Manager Damon Tinley says that’s “only a quarter of what we sell.”

The 35,000 square feet showroom is packed, too, but within the store are options on top of options on top of options. Like that particular sofa but not the fabric? It can be changed. Tinley said there are 250 fabric choices, making the upholstery business Mod’s main business. “On most frames, you can change the fabric,” he says.

How about turning that model into a six-piece or 20-piece sectional? “We can make it for you,” Tinley says.

What about the customer who seeks modern, mid-century modern or transitional furniture but has no idea where to place it in the home? No problem, Tinley says. Some of the salespeople are also designers “who can put together a home if you need to,” he says. “Colors, sizes, styles, you name it, we’ve got it.”

They even have art. If someone wants to hang an abstract piece, an in-house framer who Tinley says is also an artist will take a non-copyrighted image, add his own touches, and now there’s a painting on the wall to go with all that new furniture.

That’s how Mod does it: It stays away from cookie-cutter disposable furniture found at big box stores and lets you have it your way, your style, your uniqueness.

The key is Mod’s access to higher-end pieces and craftsmanship that cost a third of what they cost elsewhere.

“It’s easy to be unique, but it’s harder to be affordable,” Tinley says. “If you’re getting unique, just like a unique car, unique watch or unique suit, usually they’re more expensive, harder to come by and, naturally, more costly.”

There are no sales gimmicks and no high pressure sales tactics. People who come in are greeted warmly and then left alone to wander and shop at their pleasure.

And much of everything and everyone is local. Tinley says the owner lives nearby, and nothing is outsourced.

“We’re local. Buy local,” Tinley says.
